The Ceres City Council on April 14 approved a $5,000 sponsorship for the Ceres Street Fair, voting 5–0 to fund the nonprofit that organizes the downtown event.
Lisa Manto Moore, chair of the Street Fair and a representative for the event, told the council the Street Fair is a standalone 501(c)(3) that pays most operating expenses and that the city’s contribution this year would help cover the cost of outside security as the police department is understaffed. “The funding offered by the city of Ceres in this agreement is very helpful,” Moore said, adding the fair typically draws about 20,000 people to downtown and funnels revenue to local nonprofit food vendors and performers.
Council members discussed the city’s tight budget but said supporting youth and nonprofit fundraising at the street fair justified the modest contribution. Council Member James Casey said he supported the sponsorship because the event benefits local youth organizations. The motion to approve item No. 8 of the consent calendar passed on a roll-call vote.
The sponsorship will be processed under the consent calendar; the staff report listed the amount as $5,000. Moore said any funds raised by the fair are managed by the nonprofit and reinvested in the event and local nonprofits.
Next steps: staff will finalize the sponsorship agreement and process the payment under the consent calendar action.
