Commissioner urges permanent Gateway Park screen for resident watch parties

Commissioner Styverson proposed installing a permanent outdoor audio-visual feature on the west side of Gateway Park to host resident-only watch parties, movie nights and recurring community events.

"Sports are the universal language," Styverson told colleagues, arguing the city has "missed out" on events like the World Baseball Classic and the Olympics because it lacks permanent infrastructure. She described the idea as a legacy project and said early vendor feedback suggested a roughly $80,000 figure for a comparable installation elsewhere, while acknowledging final costs could be higher depending on scope and materials.

The commission treated the discussion as a budget and policy issue rather than an immediate purchase. Several commissioners said the concept appealed as a way to increase community-building opportunities, but raised practical constraints: weather-related reliability for outdoor events, the absence of a nearby indoor venue, and the added security and staffing costs for large gatherings. One commissioner noted that a recent city anniversary event required nearly 30 public-safety personnel and urged the group to factor staffing into any cost estimate.

Mayor Setchan asked staff to include Styverson’s memo in the agenda packet. Vice Mayor Viscara and other members said they would prefer to see specific price options (build vs. temporary rental), security-cost estimates and the potential for federal or grant funding before endorsing construction. Staff agreed to add the proposal and supporting cost scenarios to upcoming budget discussions so commissioners could weigh long-term capital investment against operating and public-safety costs.

Next steps: staff will place Styverson’s memo in the agenda package and return with cost options and security/staffing estimates for the commission’s budget review.
