County unveils schedule for zoning-code rewrite and comprehensive-plan public hearings

County planning staff updated commissioners on a comprehensive rewrite of Madison County—s zoning resolution and companion comprehensive plan.
Staff reported Crossroads Community Planning is preparing a revised draft and requested comments from boards and stakeholders by April 3. The consultant will hold two public engagement meetings on May 14 and May 21 to present the draft; the regional planning commission is scheduled to review the document on June 9 with final county hearings anticipated in late June.
Staff emphasized that the revision is largely an amended-and-restated code intended to replace the old text in its entirety but that members should examine proposed changes carefully because amendments can affect existing uses and enforcement.
Commissioners and staff discussed timing, review windows and postcard/mail notification schedules. Staff recommended beginning the formal process only after the board is comfortable with the draft to avoid rushing required posting and review steps.
