Milton planning staff updates: Cook Out Burger, Dunkin', McDonald's and courthouse concept discussed

Planning staff provided project updates and early concepts during the Board of Adjustments meeting on April 27.

Staff said the Cook Out Burger application could come before the board within months and that a Dunkin' Donuts sign was noted in the field; McDonald's development had paused while acquiring DOT permits but is expected to resume construction possibly starting in January. For the courthouse parcel, staff described an early-stage developer concept that would retain the historic courthouse front, remove later wings, and build new mixed-use housing behind—including potential commercial on ground floors and residential above—with green space and a proposed amphitheater at Jernigan's Landing. Staff emphasized the concept remains under negotiation and would return with formal applications if the developer proceeds.

Board members asked about permitting status and specific sites; staff said further technical and permitting steps remain and that the planning department would continue to coordinate with county and state agencies where required.

The board also agreed to move its next meeting that would fall on Memorial Day to Monday, June 1.
