Representative Oliver presented House Bill 116 to expand an existing EMS education program by including the Alabama Department of Public Health’s six regional EMS offices among training providers and offering tuition reimbursement. "In exchange for tuition reimbursement, students would enter into a contractual agreement ... to work for a minimum of two years following successful completion," the sponsor said.
Qualifying service placements listed in the hearing included licensed ambulance services, volunteer rescue squads and volunteer fire departments. Senators asked how local placements are arranged; the sponsor explained that local EMS councils or local departments can request instruction or arrange instructors.
The committee moved and seconded the bill and recorded a favorable report. The bill will proceed for further consideration; the hearing did not include a specific appropriation or program budget in the committee discussion.
