Renton council adopts Ripple Fiber franchise, sets public hearing and schedules ordinances for second reading

At the April 6 Renton City Council meeting the body took several formal actions.

Franchise ordinance adopted: Council voted to adopt an ordinance granting Hyperfiber of Washington LLC, doing business as Ripple Fiber, the authority to install fiber-optic communications facilities in the city right-of-way. The motion to adopt was made by Council Member Van, seconded by Council Member Albertson, and approved by roll call with each council member recorded as "I." (Recorded roll call included Council President Perez, Council Member Vaughn, Council Member Alverson, Council Member Rivera, Council Member O'Hollerin and Council Member Prince.)

Resolution setting public hearing: The council adopted a resolution (file VAC 260001) setting a public hearing on May 4, 2026 to consider a Renton School District petition to vacate portions of South Tum Street, an alley from Shadic Avenue South to Logan Avenue South and South Tobin Street from Shadic Ave S to Logan Ave S. The motion was moved by Council Member Prince and seconded; the resolution passed by voice vote.

Ordinances scheduled for second reading: Council placed an ordinance amending Renton Municipal Code section 8-1-10 to establish 2025–2026 solid-waste collection service rates, and placed Ordinance No. 6170 on second and final reading to amend zoning regulations for indoor recreation facilities. Committee reports supporting the code changes and a contract supplement for a SW 43rd Street / SR 167 ramps project were presented earlier in the meeting.

Consent agenda: The council approved a 17-item consent agenda by motion and voice vote; no items were pulled for separate discussion.
