Commission recommends sign-variance for Castle Motors awning at 9000 Ogden Avenue

The Brookfield Planning & Zoning Commission on July 24 moved to recommend approval of a sign-variance request for Castle Motors at 9000 Ogden Avenue, permitting a third wall sign and an awning sign that exceed several dimensional and text limits in the village's sign code.

A petitioner who identified himself in the record as "Izza, Paul" presented a simplified Castle Motors awning sign that would show the company logo and phone number; he said the intent is to make the business visible to westbound and eastbound traffic and to remove other text elements. Petitioner acknowledged that some signs had been installed without permits, said the contractor had placed them, and committed to securing the required permits and inspections if the variance is granted.

Staff told commissioners that if the awning sign is altered to meet the code language recommended by staff, they would recommend approval and reiterated that permits and inspections remain required regardless of variance approval. Public comment on the case was waived; commissioners discussed that the property has been before the commission multiple times and that improvements are evident.

Action taken: The commission voted to recommend approval of the requested variances (case number 251) and noted the commission is advisory; the petitioner must appear before the Village Board on Aug. 25 for final action. Commissioners emphasized enforcement of permitting and inspections during the building-permit process.
