Panel votes to rename East Conway roundabout 'Olivera Circle' after crash victims; family declines consent calendar placement

Senator Maki introduced the bill and said he was joined by local representatives in support. Pamela Clarkson, Kathy Olivera’s sister, gave emotional testimony describing the family’s loss in a 2018 collision at the intersection the roundabout replaced. "I cannot begin to tell you the difference that Rotary has made in my life ... ever since that rotary was placed, I no longer have that anxiety and I don't have the visuals anymore," Clarkson said.
Representative Woodcock and others supported the petition citing the safety gains after the roundabout was built. The committee moved and in executive session voted to pass the bill (clerk announced 13 in the affirmative, none in the negative, four absent). The family asked that the bill not be placed on the consent calendar so they can attend floor action; the committee honored that request.
Next steps: the committee’s report will send SB 629 to the floor with the committee recommendation that it pass.
