Commission approves Daffy 50 activities, circus at Tom Never's Field, community day and summer yoga

The Parks and Recreation Commission approved four event and program permits that will shape the island's summer schedule.

Dina, from Culture and Tourism, described the Daffy 50 children's‑beach plans: family activities including a hat pageant, bike and dog parades, a puppet and magic show, and an expected 500 attendees spread across the morning on April 25. Commissioners approved the request; Dina said two food trucks will be allowed if properly permitted, and staff cleared a separate request to place golden pinwheels around the lawn as a commemorative element.

The commission also approved a request from the Mariah Mitchell Association to use Tom Never's Field July 20–27 for the Stargazer Circus and Gala. Organizers told commissioners the circus will bring living trailers (about five or six), roughly 11–12 vehicles for equipment and that up to 500 people could attend per show; a camping variance from the health board was previously granted and the tent permit remains subject to building‑department approval.

A representative from NHA (Joselyn) requested Children's Beach for a community day on Aug. 5 (rain date Aug. 6) with up to 300 visitors and performances by Wampanoag artists; the commission approved the recurring event. Commissioners also approved Betina Broward's annual bandstand yoga series (June 26–Sept. 26, Mon–Sat 7:30–8:30 a.m.).

All four items were moved and approved by voice votes at the meeting. Commissioners noted that attendance numbers listed are maximums across an event day and that operations (e.g., food trucks or tent permits) remain subject to the relevant permitting processes.

Next steps: organizers should secure any outstanding permits (tent, food vendors, building permits) and work with town staff on logistics and safety checks before the events.
