Fire chief urges county to press legislature over proposed 15-year truck standard

"The state fire marshall's office is talking about coming down and starting to red tag any truck that's over 15 years old." He said his department operates several trucks that are well beyond 15 years and that replacement or strict enforcement would be financially burdensome.
The chief proposed that the budget committee recommend a letter from the legislative body to state officials asking for leeway or clarification on any such enforcement and to explain the fiscal challenge for counties with small tax bases. Commissioners agreed to place the item on the next legislative agenda and asked staff to prepare the document and route it through the mayor’s office for formal submission.
Stanley also reviewed capital and maintenance needs in his department’s budget: shifting grant-funded items into a grants account, continuing turnout-gear purchases through state grants, and setting aside funds for equipment that is difficult to replace or repair as trucks age. He described plans to add automatic tire-chain systems for two station trucks to prevent damage in winter conditions.
No formal action was taken beyond directing staff to draft the proposed letter and schedule the item for the legislative session; commissioners asked that the letter be presented during the next legislative meeting for a formal vote.
