Garden City council opposes state bills that would limit local zoning authority on housing

Garden City — The City Council on April 6 adopted a resolution opposing a package of proposed state laws that, if enacted, would impose statewide dimensions and other limits on local housing regulations.
Planner Mr. Ortega told the council the bills under consideration would, as drafted, cap minimum lot sizes at about 1,500 square feet, allow minimum dwelling areas as small as 500 square feet, restrict front yard setbacks to no more than 15 feet and side/rear setbacks to five feet, and limit parking requirements for multifamily housing to one space per unit. "These bills, if made law, would mandate dimensional regulations for housing," Ortega said.
Councilmember King, who moved the resolution, said the measures would force local zoning ordinances to conform to state specifications and could materially change neighborhood character if enacted. He urged residents to contact state legislators to express opposition. Council members noted that the city is simultaneously revising its master plan and exploring local housing strategies that reflect Garden City’s needs.
The resolution names House Bills 5529–5532 and 5581–5585 and directs the city to register its opposition; the council approved the measure by a 7‑0 vote.
