The Town of Templeton Select Board voted April 6 in open session to approve an extension of the contract for Public Services Director Robert Szek through Oct. 19, 2026.
Town counsel and staff noted that, under the Open Meeting Law, a public body may discuss terms in executive session but must take the final vote to execute or extend agreements in open session. The board said it had agreed to terms in executive session and moved to ratify the extension in the public meeting.
The transcript records roll-call votes read into the public record as members responded; the recorded votes in that sequence were: Mr. Bennett (no), Mr. May (no), Miss Graves (yes), Mr. Toe (no), Miss Basso (yes), and the chair (yes). Following the roll call the board directed staff to prepare a job description and to begin advertising for a replacement, noting that the present contract expires June 30, 2026 and that the town will need to coordinate recruitment and potential transition planning.
Board members asked whether a new hire could overlap with the departing director given budget constraints; staff said the FY27 budget lacks funds to pay two people for the same position and that the town would need to plan timing carefully.
Next steps: the board asked the administrator to prepare a job description, an advertising plan, and to return with recruitment options and timeline. Staff will draft motions and coordinate any necessary paperwork for public posting and budgeting.
