Committee approves budget amendment reallocating funds for repairs, tutoring and capital projects

The Wilson County Education Committee approved Budget Amendment No. 10 after a staff member outlined reallocations for insurance recoveries, grants, staffing and capital projects.
The presenter listed several items covered by the amendment: insurance reimbursements for recent transportation accidents; a $12,115 insurance payment for intercom damage at Watertown Elementary after a lightning strike; a correction to a technology line item; reclassification of early literacy tutoring grant funds for K–4 instructional supplies and materials; and a $74,600 Tutoring Innovation Grant to fund 48 before-and-after ELA and math tutors for grades 6–8 at roughly $40 per hour for up to 12 weeks.
The staff member said the amendment also reallocates funds for short-term staffing at Central Pike (a registrar for three months, an assistant principal and a bookkeeper) and described a state high-cost reimbursement the presenter said would be used largely for special education summer programming, staffing, and classroom materials. The transcript includes two different figures for that reimbursement during the presentation (one partial figure and a later reference to $104,000); the presenter said the district will use the funds for summer special-education staffing, staff development, instructional supplies, furniture and equipment such as cameras and iPads.
The amendment authorizes drawing down an assigned fund balance of $2 million for textbook curriculum (health and physical education) and reallocates $92,785 in Fund 177 capital-project balances to cover bid overruns on renovations to the West Wilson Middle School athletic facility and paving at Mount Juliet Middle School. The presenter told the committee bids for the West Wilson athletic facility rose from about $1.0 million in bond estimates to roughly $1.5 million, requiring an additional $400,000–$500,000; the Mount Juliet paving bid also came in several hundred thousand dollars higher than initial estimates.
A committee member asked for total overrun figures; the presenter said she did not have the consolidated totals ready at the meeting. The motion to approve Budget Amendment No. 10 passed following the presentation.
