Committee hears report on enrollment growth and Central Pike staffing

The Wilson County Education Committee heard a report on enrollment trends and staffing plans as the district prepares for spring break and upcoming student testing, a staff member said.
The presenter said Central Pike is being staffed with a temporary registrar for three months beginning in April, an assistant principal starting in June and a bookkeeper beginning in June to support the principal as the campus opens and duties are established. The staff member said Rutland Elementary is the near-term ‘‘hot spot’’ for growth and that the district is reallocating teachers to relieve overcrowding at Lakewood and Rutland.
The presenter reported that Rutland Elementary was at about 97 percent capacity and that districtwide enrollment shows modest growth compared with the past four to five years. The committee was told the district expects to have clearer enrollment projections in about a month.
Committee members did not take formal action on staffing at the meeting; the staffing changes were described as reallocations within existing budget lines and as temporary hires to support Central Pike during start-up.
