Geneva council honors state gymnastics champion Reese Lackey and welcomes new water & sewer worker Dorian Vargas

The Geneva City Council paused regular business to recognize two community members. Reese Lackey, a Geneva High School senior who won the IHSA floor state championship in 2026, joined the council chamber and described her routine, training and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater to study kinesiology. Lackey said she still feels nervous before competing but that the music and her choreography help her focus: "I get very very nervous until the music starts and then it's very powerful and it feels like flowy," she said. The council presented a commemorative display and small gifts.
The council also welcomed Dorian Vargas, who was introduced as a water and sewer maintenance worker and a U.S. Army veteran. Vargas summarized his military service, technical training at Universal Technical Institute, and prior work as a mechanic. Council members thanked him for his service and noted his field certifications and on‑the‑job responsibilities.
Both recognitions were ceremonial and did not require formal action. The display for Lackey will be mounted in town and staff will coordinate placement.
