Big Sky Resort asks Madison County to consider making Low Dog Road a one-way route to ease village congestion

Chad Wilson, vice president of construction for Big Sky Resort, and accompanying project staff described traffic backups and safety concerns on Low Dog Road and asked the Madison County Commission to consider making the county easement a one-way route so resort traffic flows more safely into and out of the village.
Commissioners and county staff discussed several procedural and legal issues: county road standards do not currently include a one-way provision, so adopting a one-way designation likely would require an ordinance amendment or use of a variance process; there are questions about whether an existing Road Improvement District (RID) assessment and scope would allow the changed configuration; and staff recommended confirming whether the affected roadway is still dedicated as a county-maintained road or if an abandonment or joint maintenance option would be feasible.
Resort representatives said they would fund improvements on resort property and preferred a path of least resistance for changes, while county staff proposed exchanging right-of-way and technical information with resort engineers and legal counsel to identify a process that preserves RID funding where required. Commissioners did not vote on any changes; staff suggested follow-up with engineering, county legal counsel and an RFP or variance path as appropriate.
