Fire Foundation readies May 9 EMS showcase; buys turnout bags, reports $100,000 balance

The Fire Foundation told the San Rafael Fire Commission it is preparing for a May 9 EMS showcase and has purchased 80 turnout bags to limit carcinogen transfer to personal vehicles.
"We have used funds to purchase 80 bags and we are awaiting their arrival," said Carrie, who introduced herself to the commission as president of the Fire Foundation. She said the foundation will insert an informational letter into each bag describing the foundation’s programs and prior members.
Carrie said the foundation’s balance is "about $100,000," and that the turnout-bag purchase will cost roughly $10,000–$10,600 before discounts. She described discussions about whether to hold fundraising events and urged a cautious approach: the foundation does not want to solicit donations without a clear request tied to identified needs.
The foundation plans to staff a booth for the May 9 showcase and rotate apparatus so on-duty crews are not required to remain at the event. Carrie also described social-media outreach, a new website and volunteer contributions to storytelling and outreach.
Commissioners said they will reserve the date and requested copies of the informational letter for commission members. The commission and foundation agreed to coordinate public messaging and distribution of a one-page summary of department needs ahead of any formal asks of the city council.
The commission approved the meeting minutes from Feb. 11 at the start of the session. The meeting adjourned at the end of the agenda.
