Hackensack swears in Karen Gwyn as temporary municipal judge

Superior Court Judge James Slattly administered the oath at the council meeting. During the ceremony Gwyn recited the oath and said she would "support the Constitution" and perform the duties of temporary municipal judge "faithfully, impartially and justly." The chamber offered applause and multiple guests and judges stood to show support.
The council also presented a proclamation honoring longtime local theater contributors Nicholas Piciello and Maryanne Di Maria for their work on the community production "The Christmas Caper," and several past and present cast members performed a musical selection at the meeting.
The appointment fills a municipal-court role the city handles locally; the resolution authorizing the temporary appointment was moved and adopted by the council before the swearing-in. Mayor Kasim Gaines and multiple county officials, including Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Kurid, attended and publicly congratulated Gwyn.
Council members said the ceremony was both a civic and community moment coming near the end of the year; no policy action accompanied the appointment beyond the formal resolution.
