The Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept a leadership profile prepared by Education Support Services to guide the search for a permanent superintendent.
Consultants told trustees the profile is based on 726 completed online surveys plus 175 in‑person or focus‑group meetings and interviews. "This is a vital piece of information that will help candidates and trustees understand the needs and challenges from a variety of perspectives," one presenter said during the summary of findings.
The report highlights two overarching strengths: strong community engagement and a committed, responsive staff. It also lists three priority challenges: fostering cohesion on the governing board, navigating fiscal uncertainty and addressing persistent learning gaps for some student groups. The presentation emphasized desired superintendent qualities including the ability to build trust, strong teaching and learning knowledge and fiscal stewardship.
Trustees asked whether the survey data could be disaggregated by respondent group (parents, certificated staff, classified staff). Consultants said the work completed so far was qualitative and additional quantitative breakdowns would require extra time and cost. The board accepted the report for publication and directed staff to use it in recruitment, interview development and candidate evaluation.
The leadership profile will be used in recruitment materials and to shape interview questions and candidate evaluation as the search moves forward.
