The superintendent also announced upcoming events: a retiree recognition dinner on May 16, senior signing and award nights on May 19 and 21, and observance of Memorial Day on May 26.
The District English Learner Advisory Committee (DAC) presented its annual report. The DAC presenter introduced parent members from multiple schools (Ava Romero, Maria Turin, Anna Monroy, Sonia Colchado, Anna Maria Via Senor and Sandra Valddorama) and instructional coaches Marie Ferguson and Olivia Rosco. The presenter described the DAC's role "to advise district officials on how to best support English learners," noted that 107 students demonstrated English fluency this year and described the district's first district-wide reclassification ceremony on Dec. 18.
The DAC report emphasized routine practices: reviewing the district language census, focusing on attendance as critical to learning, supporting ELPAC test readiness, and participating in the California Association of Bilingual Educators regional conference. The presenter closed by thanking board members and offering certificates of appreciation to DAC members.
Board members used their reports to acknowledge the superintendent's recognition and to celebrate students. Dr. Lansston Sylvester and Jeff Brown praised student events and the district's outreach; other trustees shared personal reflections on advocacy trips and the value of student stories.
Next steps: staff will proceed with implementing adopted instructional materials and continue DAC engagement in the Local Control and Accountability Plan process; the board will reconvene on May 27 for its next regular meeting.
