Commissioners authorize staff to pursue Lowe’s Community Grant partnerships and submissions

Walton County staff briefed the commission about the Lowe’s Community Grant Program and asked for authorization to allow county administration and legal to assist local nonprofit partners and governmental entities with project submissions.
Mike Thornton, Deputy County Administrator, explained the program funds up to four projects per community for physical improvements such as community centers, parks, first-responder facilities and skilled-trade education. He noted eligibility requires a sponsoring 501(c)(3) or governmental entity, projects to be completed by Dec. 15 of the year, and that works be within 30 miles of a Lowe’s store. Because of a truncated timeline (the county was notified late), staff asked authority for administration and legal to help with applications; the board approved the request 5–0.
Commissioners suggested possible projects—lighting for We Care Park and other park improvements—and asked that staff reach out to community groups that could qualify and apply.
Staff said they will coordinate potential county partnerships, advise interested nonprofits and bring candidate projects forward publicly before submissions.
