Henrico County School Board members met March 12, 2026 for a work session in which they approved the meeting agenda and consent item 5.01, held a closed session under Virginia law to discuss personnel and potential litigation, and heard a series of community and student-related announcements.
During routine business, Mr. Young moved to approve the meeting agenda; Mrs. Kinsella seconded the motion and the board approved it by voice vote. Later the board voted to enter a closed session, citing items A1 and A7 of Code of Virginia §2.2-3711 for discussions related to personnel actions and consultation on probable litigation about a public nuisance; the motion was seconded and the board recessed into closed session. After returning, Mr. Young moved to certify the closed session by recorded vote, the motion was seconded, and the board certified that only matters exempted by law had been discussed.
The board also approved the consent agenda, including item 5.01; Mrs. Kinsella moved the consent-item motion and Mrs. Shea seconded, and the board approved the item by voice vote.
Board members then moved to new business and heard multiple announcements from Mrs. Atkins. "I'm pleased to announce that the Varina District Community Athletic Advisory Committee, also known as VAAC, has officially launched," she said, adding the committee has about 15 members and is chaired by Ms. Johnson, an HCPS employee who is developing the committee's work plan. Mrs. Atkins also announced a tribute to Ms. Alice Robinson scheduled for Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Varina High School auditorium and thanked Mayfair Principal Ms. Bourgeois, Principal Sears and Athletic Director Folsom for their roles in organizing the event.
Mrs. Atkins described recent student-focused activities, saying she attended the GRIT (Growing Resources of Information Technology) conference where Deep Run High School information-technology students presented on topics ranging from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity. She also reported attending Rule of Law Students Day at the Supreme Court of Virginia, an event hosted by Chief Justice Cleo Powell that included mock trials and presentations; Highland Springs students Ariel Boone and Angelique Leonard won a logo contest tied to the program, and Varina High School student Nazifa Parme won an essay competition that will be displayed in the court.
The board was also told about a community meeting for Varina, Cateson and Highland Springs residents on March 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gravel Hill Center of Varina (5417 Long Ridge Road, Henrico). Mrs. Atkins said childcare and dinner will be provided and that the meeting will focus on toxic pollution and health impacts in the East End.
Chair Irving closed the work session after announcing the board's next work session for March 26, 2026 at 3:00 p.m., followed by a monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m.; meeting times may be adjusted as needed.
