'Justice for All' companion bill unscheduled in Senate, county may pursue special session opportunity

Dave Sager, the county's chief of public safety, updated the committee on state legislation known locally as "Justice for All" (Assembly Bill 514 and Senate Bill 546). He said the Assembly passed its version but the Senate had not scheduled consideration; if enacted the legislation would provide for an additional 2.6 assistant district attorney positions and related public defender staff allocations.
Sager noted the unusual fractional FTE count reflects prior county decisions to supply partial or companion funding: "As we all know, FTEs come in 1.0's...the last several years, the county board along with the executive and finance have been gracious enough to afford us the 6 position. That would be the companion to the 0.4 ARPA funded position...so that's why you see the 2.6 positions," he said.
Sager encouraged continued advocacy and said a likely special session in April could provide another opportunity to schedule the Senate consideration. The committee did not take formal action during the meeting.
