The Beaufort County Planning Commission approved a request to change the name of Joey Dobs Road to Blue Heron Lane after staff verified the required signatures and E911 confirmed no problematic duplication.
Property owner Jessica Gonen, who said she owns three properties on the road, told the commission the name had previously been Oak Road and had been changed to Joey Dobs by someone who did not live on the road. “We are the only people back there that actually live full-time…we just want it to be a little more Beaufort,” she said.
Staff noted the petition met the county’s 51% signature threshold and that E911 had vetted similar names across nearby jurisdictions. Commissioners asked that staff ensure E911 and USPS notifications occur after final action; staff confirmed they will coordinate notifications.
A motion to approve the name change under the standards in section 7.2.100.D passed unanimously.
