Board clears larger sign for Sherland Drive building

A representative for the sign installer said the property (5.92 acres, C2) houses a tenant that occupies the whole building and that a larger sign is necessary for visibility across the building’s more than 200-foot frontage. “If you went 32 square foot on that building, it would look this big,” the representative said, explaining the requested size would occupy only a small portion of the façade.
Staff told the board that the city’s recently amended sign ordinance allows larger signs — in the city the comparable allowance would be 320 square feet rather than the county’s 32 — and that the city’s ordinance had been based on the county’s rules.
After brief discussion, a member moved to approve the variance; the motion was seconded and the board approved the request. No recorded roll-call tally was given in the transcript.
The board did not place additional conditions on the permit during the hearing.
