At the hearing, the resident who identified themself as Miller explained the clutter resulted from moving and a series of postponed garage sales. Miller told the council they planned sales during citywide events and the county fair and had arranged for dumpsters to remove remaining items after the fair. “I moved into the property three years ago … that photo is three years old,” Miller said, adding they would remove items “after the fair” and expected most personal items to remain on the porch only briefly.
City staff and council members pressed for clearer timelines and visible progress. A staff member noted neighbors had filed complaints about items left in the driveway through two winters and reported issuing a deadline of May 30 earlier; council agreed to a new firm deadline. Council member Mr. Ell said items should at least be moved inside a garage or otherwise out of public view and suggested coordinating with local dumpster providers. “If you get an entire dumpster full of articles off that property, that’d be good,” he said.
Council directed staff (Don and Mr. Ell) to monitor compliance and work with the resident on logistics. The council clarified that anything “deemed as junk” must be removed from public view by July 4; staff will determine whether items are salvageable or must be disposed of.
The council’s action was recorded as part of the meeting’s nuisance enforcement item; no formal fine or abatement action was announced at the May 2 meeting. Council members indicated they would follow up if the property was not cleaned by the deadline.
