Trustees heard an update from the facilities committee about capital projects for the 2026–27 school year and discussed plans to explore a fitness center at Lynbrook High School that would require buying a vacant parcel next to the high school and the village-owned firehouse.
Mr. Pleski told the board the committee will tour buildings to prioritize projects and work with administration on a multi-year plan. He said any purchase of property and construction for a fitness center "would require community approval during the budget vote in May of 26," and that further financial details would be shared as planning proceeds.
On the educational rationale, Mr. Pleski said the district wants a fitness center usable by all students — for physical education, lifelong fitness instruction and teams — not merely an athletics-only weight room. "If we were to build this, we'd be able to offer that to many, many more students," he said.
Administrators also described the status of other capital projects: most summer work is complete, a few remaining door-lock items are pending, and documentation for next-season projects has been submitted to the State Education Department. Mr. Press told the board review times at the SED are now running about "four weeks for each phase," and the district is planning to seek approvals and go out to bid in early 2026 depending on state timing.
What happens next: the facilities committee will tour buildings and return with narrowed priorities and cost estimates; any fitness-center plan will require voter approval in the district’s May 2026 budget vote and further financial details before a final decision.
