Curry County emergency manager: Pistol River landslide remains active; crews working to reopen road

GT O, Curry County's emergency manager, told the Board of Commissioners on March 17 that the North Bank Pistol River landslide remained active and hazardous.
"The slide remains very active," GT O said. He described crews breaking up large boulders, stabilizing the slope and working to clear one lane of the roadway as soon as conditions permit. He said crews will not work at night because they need daylight to observe rock movement on higher elevations.
GT O asked residents who do not need to travel near the slide to stay away while operations continue. He said work will continue over the next several days and pledged to provide an update the following day and to push out any milestones or changes in road access.
The emergency manager emphasized that the situation remains "treacherous" for workers, with rock and material continuing to fall from the slope, and urged patience from local residents and recreational users.
The county said it will not risk night operations until the slope shows less movement; the emergency manager said the roadbed will be patched and eventually paved after debris removal and stabilization work.
The county plans to issue further briefings as the response progresses.
