Haywood County Schools honor state champions and winter athletes from multiple programs

At the Haywood County Board of Education meeting, coaches and team representatives described a banner winter season across multiple sports and introduced dozens of student-athletes for public recognition.
A wrestling presenter detailed the team’s accomplishments: a 27–2 season, conference dual-team and tournament championships, repeated West regional championships and, this year, the 4A state team championship. The presenter named individual achievers — several all-conference selections, state qualifiers and two individual state champions — and noted an NC NHSCA high school All-American and a freshman who finished the season with 52 wins.
Coaches for girls basketball and other winter sports highlighted conference championships, tournament victories and individual honors. One coach said the girls finished 17–0 this season, won the conference and won the conference tournament, then made a deeper run in the state playoffs than in recent years.
Taylor Henson, who self-identified as a coach, introduced the cheer team and thanked the board and the community: “When they finally stepped out on the mat, it was something truly special. You could genuinely feel the presence of the Holy Spirit with our team,” Henson said, adding that the squad’s unity and commitment stood out.
Danny Williamson, who introduced himself as a coach and named Lisa Frasier as a colleague, reported indoor track-and-field highlights including multiple school records and top state finishes; the district will host the 4A West regional this spring, he said. Coaches across programs emphasized student dedication, parental support and the role of the athletic department.
The board recessed for five minutes after the recognition segment and then resumed to take up administrative business.
