Council issues proclamations for sexual assault and child-abuse-prevention months; honors longtime instructor

At the March 23 meeting, Aiken City Council presented three community proclamations.
Council recognized Nancy Hansen for 44 years as a fitness instructor at the H. Odell Weeks Activity Center. Councilwoman Morgan read the proclamation that credited Hansen with running programs including line dancing, yoga and the Silver Sneakers program and noted more than 5,000 visits to the center last fiscal year. Hansen accepted the recognition and described the work as a collaborative effort: "It's not a oneperson thing at all. It is what we the city, our community, these dedicated teachers and just wonderful staff" who made the programs possible.
April Jordan, director of outreach for the Cumby Center, gave a presentation marking April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Jordan described Cumby Center's services (a 24-hour crisis hotline, shelter, counseling and court advocacy) across six South Carolina counties and highlighted volunteers and community-awareness efforts such as ribbon displays and an awareness bake-off at the H. Odell Weeks center.
Councilwoman Diggs read a proclamation designating April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and presented it to Peggy Ford of the Children's Place, noting state and county substantiated-investigation figures cited in the proclamation and urging continued cross-sector prevention efforts.
These recognitions carry no policy changes; they are formal acknowledgements and community outreach endorsements by the council.
