Hinsdale trustees review donor commitments and design for Burlington Park pavilion

The Hinsdale Village Board held first reads on two donor letters of intent and the exterior appearance and site plan for a new pavilion at Burlington Park on March 16.
Trustees heard that private partners — Chicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale, the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce and Hinsdale Bank & Trust — are supporting the project. According to the materials presented, the hospital’s letter of intent would cover 50% of construction costs capped at $350,000 (effectively up to $175,000); the chamber has committed up to $100,000. Staff said Hinsdale Bank & Trust will provide support though no letter of intent was on file for that donor.
The board also discussed how donors should be recognized. Trustees pressed whether the hospital commitment implied naming rights beyond a donor plaque; staff said details would be set in a master donation agreement and returned to the board for approval. The working group told the board it had not agreed to final naming language and that any recognition would follow village policy and comply with applicable sign and open-space codes.
Trustee commentary focused on design, siting and long-term stewardship. The working group presented renderings and described a roughly 20-by-30-foot gable-front pavilion with trim and column details that echo Memorial Hall, an elevated brick foundation and the possible reuse of historic brick. The group recommended siting the pavilion on the west side of Burlington Park to preserve historic sight lines and to avoid substantial utility conflicts.
Public works staff explained a Flag Creek-related line and other utilities run under portions of the park, limiting alternative siting options. Trustees asked staff to include alternates and value‑engineering options in the RFP to keep construction costs manageable and to ensure any donor recognition is sensitive to the park’s historic character.
No final approvals were taken; staff said the next steps are to prepare a master donation agreement and a construction RFP. The board expects the RFP and a second read on the donation agreement and contract award to return in the coming weeks with the goal of minimizing disruption to Uniquely Thursday events and the Hinsdale Art Fair and targeting a July 2026 completion.
Trustee Jesse Burns said the board would “take a really good look at those costs” as bids are received and alternates are considered. The board asked that final electrical, landscaping and accessibility details be included in materials provided with the second read.
