City planner reports code enforcement at Rumly Hotel; commission discusses historical markers

City planner David Heinald told the La Porte Historic Preservation Commission on March 17 that the city has initiated code enforcement at the Rumly Hotel after being alerted that windows were being replaced without building permits or downtown design-review approval.
"We actually were alerted to the fact that they were replacing windows on Jefferson Avenue," Heinald said, and added the property had not submitted the required design-review materials or requested building permits. He said staff has instructed the property owner to follow the proper procedures and that the matter is an active code-enforcement issue.
Commissioners also discussed the commission's role in promoting historical markers. Chair Sally Lorocco, who noted appointments with the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Bureau, said she planned to encourage the placement of one marker each year and mentioned several candidate honorees, including Sebastian Lei and Dr. Mayo, and possible locations such as the library courtyard and Michigan Avenue.
Members suggested marker sites that would also be suitable AutoCast locations and discussed the need to confirm site integrity and ownership before pursuing markers. No formal vote was taken on markers during the meeting.
