The Hammond City Council used the March 10 meeting to introduce several land‑use items and to hear public concerns about upcoming subdivisions.
Staff introduced an ordinance to correct ordinance 26‑5790 by removing three addresses that were inadvertently included in a prior rezoning. The council voted to introduce that corrective ordinance and set a future public hearing.
A major subdivision on Huitt Road (20 lots) was introduced; planning staff said the Planning & Zoning Commission recommended adoption 4–0 but that engineering reviews (including drainage and a flood study) included outstanding items the developer must address before final approval. Developer representatives told the council most checklist items were addressed and that a flood study remained outstanding; planning staff said the incomplete flood study was a common reason developers wait to finalize some engineering items until after introduction and that final adoption would be withheld until all engineering conditions were met.
A separate seven‑lot subdivision proposed by Trent Anthony at 401 JW Davis Drive was introduced but tabled after council members said residents in District 3 had circulated a petition or list and asked for more time for community discussion. The council voted to table that introduction and will revisit it at a later meeting to allow outreach and public input.
Public comments included questions about signage for notices, project timing, and traffic/driveway impacts; developers said houses would be for sale and noted design details such as larger lot sizes and doubled setbacks on homes facing Huitt Road to reduce driveway backing hazards.
Next steps: Introduced items will return for public hearing and final action after staff confirm engineering conditions and after the council schedules the tabled Trent Anthony item for further public engagement.
