Recreation staff told the commission that a windstorm caused damage to utility poles and transformers at 21 Highland earlier in the week; power was restored by 6 p.m. the night before the meeting and staff operated remotely for a time. Activities planned for spring are moving forward: fields are tentatively opening April 1, playground inspections and treated wood-chip deliveries are being scheduled, and staff reported bleacher damage at Woodward from winter plowing that may require replacement.
Staff also reported healthy registration and program revenue: more than $100,000 in registration on the first day of 2026 enrollment (about $10,000 more than the same day in 2025) and $126,000 in the first weeks versus $115,000 last year. Summer camp revenues have already covered payroll and field trips and show an approximate $6,000 positive balance. Staff listed donations for summer activities, including $1,000 from Eagle Leasing and $1,500 combined from Eversource, Main Street Bank and Middlesex Bank, plus $1,000 from St. Mark's.
Commissioners asked for a DPW memo explaining whether the Klander drainage material and any vendor responsibility can be documented and remedied, and staff said they would request a written explanation from DPW.
The commission acknowledged popular new programs (CrossFit partnerships, a flex football/cross training camp with near-50 enrollment, and planned trips during April vacation) and discussed support for recruitment and volunteer outreach.
