Terrebonne Parish wins new grants, eyes transportation study and mitigation funds

Parish President Jason Bergeron told a Montegut town-hall audience that Terrebonne Parish has been added to the Delta Regional Authority and has secured several federal grants to fund studies and resilience efforts. "We just became a part of the Delta Regional Authority," Bergeron said, noting the parish was one of the last in the state to be added.
The administration said the parish will use a $150,000 award to finance a comprehensive transportation study that will use smartphone data and AI to score road conditions and identify trouble spots. Bergeron also confirmed a $2.6 million U.S. Economic Development Administration grant to extend utilities near the Westside Boulevard and Martin Luther King intersection, a step parish leaders say will unlock development including a planned wellness center by Terrebonne General. Bergeron said an additional $2.6 million in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding will support property elevation and other storm-hardening projects.
Why it matters: officials framed the grants as both recovery and economic-development tools. Bergeron said the transportation study will create a recorded baseline of road conditions useful for disaster response and long-term maintenance planning. The EDA utilities investment aims to spur development where a lack of water and sewer service has limited growth.
Bergeron said the parish operates on about a $260 million annual budget and that the grants supplement local revenues from sales and property taxes. He added that seven other grants are pending and, if all awarded, would total roughly $5.6 million in additional funding.
Officials directed residents to the parish website for program details and to learn how projects will be prioritized. Bergeron closed the segment by inviting questions and promising to follow up on items the administration could not resolve immediately.
