Hammond board adopts special-events application process, approves July fireworks and other event requests

The Hammond City Board of Public Works and Safety on May 7 adopted a resolution creating a standardized application and approval process for special events on public property and rights of way and approved several event requests under the new framework.

A staff member presenting the resolution thanked the controller's office, City Attorney Kristen Cantrell and police for input, and said staff had worked through multiple meetings to create a standard form and routing process. "So we wanted to kind of get it into a situation where the board... could be used to seeing, like, a standard form and then decide where that needed to go for approval," the staff member said. The board voted to adopt the resolution.

Under that policy, the board approved requests forwarded by the park board for fireworks displays at Wolf Lake Memorial Park Island (July 3, approx. 10 p.m.) and the Thomas M. McDermott senior Ammon Marina Venetian Day and night display (July 11, 10 p.m.), with the meeting record showing the park board had already approved those events.

A board member reported on the Pat Mac ride, a pediatric-cancer fundraising bicycle ride scheduled for June 26, and moved to approve the ride pending submission of the required forms and sign-offs by involved parties. The board approved that motion with the condition that organizers submit the paperwork in advance.

The board also handled a short-term alley closure request for a birthday party (May 9) and encouraged the public to begin using the newly standardized forms for future requests.

The resolution and approvals aim to make the event-permit process clearer for organizers and to ensure consistent routing to public safety and public-works reviewers before final approval.
