Bourbon County commissioners plan courthouse basement cleanout and auction of abandoned items
Summary
Commissioners approved a plan to inventory and clear clutter from the courthouse basement, allow departments one week to claim items, and pursue an auction or lot sale for unclaimed property; staff will coordinate moving assistance and confirm ownership of items left in a county building previously used by KRI.

Commissioners discussed and directed staff to proceed with a courthouse basement cleanout and to prepare for auctioning abandoned property if departments do not claim items.
Commissioner Joe Allen, who inspected the basement, said much of the material is unused and cluttering county space. "If it's just something that's sitting there and it's cluttering up the ... let's get rid of it," he said, urging departments to mark items they want to keep before county personnel move the remainder.
The commission agreed to a one-week window for departments and elected officials to inspect marked items and claim them. For property that remains unclaimed the county will arrange an auction or on-site lot sale; commissioners discussed using a county-owned building near the EMS site to stage items and to hold the auction to avoid moving goods twice.
Commissioners also asked staff to follow up on ownership questions for material left at the off-site building, noting a March text from KRI and a verbal confirmation that some equipment had been inherited by a third party; staff were asked to secure a written statement from KRI and to coordinate with county counsel before disposing of disputed property.
Public works will assist with moving on scheduled days if departments request help in advance, commissioners said. The commission asked staff to return next week with clarifying information and a proposed auction timeline.
