Chairman David Beerbower read the draft notice aloud, which states the county's intent to withdraw from the agreement effective Jan. 1, 2027, and to provide notice "prior to July 1, 2026." Beerbower said he would bring a rewritten version back to the commission with an updated date and his signature.
Commissioners discussed the fiscal implications during the exchange: commissioners noted the county's current outlay to own a portion of the juvenile detention facility is about $130,000 per year, while the county's equity in the facility was estimated during the meeting at roughly $450,000.
No formal vote to finalize withdrawal was taken; the commission instead instructed staff to revise the draft and return it for signature and any required formal action. Commissioner Beerbower said the letter would be updated and placed on next week's agenda for a final decision.
If the commission proceeds with withdrawal, the draft directs that written notice be provided to the host county, the detention center and participating counties as required by the interlocal agreement. Commissioners emphasized they wanted to provide appropriate notice and said they would coordinate with counsel to ensure legal requirements and timelines are met.
