Travel approvals: Staff member (S5) presented travel requests, including a prosecutors’ office seminar request and probation department attendance at JDAI steering committee meetings. Committee member (S2) moved to approve the travel requests; the board approved them unanimously.
DNR-prepared ordinance: Committee members discussed an ordinance prepared with input from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) intended to address compliance timelines. Staff said DNR had indicated that if the county and the municipalities of North Vernon and Vernon adopt the ordinance, DNR would not require further changes; staff also noted a target compliance date of June 22. Chair (S3) moved to approve the ordinance; the motion passed unanimously.
Rezone request: Staff (S5) presented a rezone request relating to a school sited near a cemetery. Some commissioners expressed discomfort with charging a fee for a school rezoning in that context, but S5 and others said fees have historically been charged. Chair (S3) moved to approve the rezone and the motion was approved by unanimous voice vote.
Truck-restriction ordinance: The board reviewed an unofficial detour created by a State Road 7 bridge closure and read a proposed ordinance prohibiting commercial truck traffic on the detour route (the read-back listed a sequence of county roads and connectors that form the unofficial detour). Chair (S3) moved to sign the ordinance and the board executed the signatures; commissioners directed staff to send a signed copy to the highway department to place signs and to the sheriff’s office for enforcement. The board indicated signage and enforcement would follow once the highway department installs signs.
Library appointment: The board received three candidates for an open library board seat (Wayne Zamora, Brad Bender and Tom Moore) and agreed to table the selection for further review.
Several motions at the meeting were carried by unanimous voice vote and were procedural in nature.
