Port Orange proclaims April Water Conservation Month; expert says small actions save thousands of gallons

"I had an inch and a half of rain. . . you could shut off your sprinkler for probably over a week," Smith said, noting that shutting off a single irrigation cycle can save roughly 9,000 gallons of water.
Smith emphasized that outdoor irrigation accounts for a large portion of household water use and suggested simple behaviors such as skipping irrigation after rain, turning off faucets when shaving or brushing teeth, and involving children in conservation habits to change household norms.
The council received the proclamation and thanked the district representative. The district left an example rain gauge as an educational prop for council members and the public.
