The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation on April 8 declaring May 2026 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Month.
Commissioner Lions read the citation, describing ALS as a progressive neurodegenerative disease and calling for support for research, clinical trials and access to medical devices and communication technologies for those affected. The motion was seconded by Mr. Brook and carried unanimously.
During public comment, Tom Noble told commissioners his mother died of ALS nine months after diagnosis and thanked the board for keeping attention on the disease. Commissioners offered condolences and reiterated the need for research and resources for people living with ALS.
