Gaithersburg issues proclamations for Arab American Heritage Month, Days of Remembrance and Green Month

The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council presented several community proclamations April 6.
The council proclaimed April 2026 Arab American Heritage Month, highlighting a Smithsonian traveling exhibit on Arab American stories at the Gaithersburg Activity Center and announcing an April 10 community celebration with presentations and resource tables. Staff and the mayor introduced proclamation recipient Ree Sharaf, who described her volunteer work with the Islamic Center of Maryland, her role as PTA president at Shady Grove Middle School and the importance of community support and mental-health services.
Council also proclaimed April 12'19 as Days of Remembrance to mark Holocaust remembrance and urged reflection and education about the moral responsibilities of communities. Council additionally designated April 2026 as Green Month and April 24 as Arbor Day and outlined community events including a tree hunt, community cleanups, a shredding and e-waste event, composting and tree-planting activities and the May 31 Fix-It Fair.
The proclamations were presented by the mayor and council and recognized local volunteers and committees involved in planning.
