Catoosa County school officials review drill requirements, AED mapping and planned executive-session safety training

Director Lusk presented the district’s safety report and state guidance on required drills at the April 7 board meeting.
Lusk said the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire provides a checklist of required drills and timelines. “The intruder drill that must be completed by October 1 is the only drill that has to be reported to two different websites,” Lusk said, referring to the fire commission and the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA). He added monthly fire drills, monthly AED-related practices and substitutions for severe weather drills are part of the schedule in certain months.
On AEDs and training, Lusk said principals with their school safety teams, including nurses and counselors, coordinate training, and that central office staff will help ensure drills and training occur. “We also have on our digital mapping the locations of our AEDs,” he said, noting portable units are used for extracurricular activities.
Lusk told trustees that some material about drill methods will be covered in a forthcoming executive-session training because it involves sensitive operational details. He said the underlying schedules and lesson-plan resources are publicly available on the state website and will also be placed on the district drive for principals and assistant principals.
Board members asked who is responsible for AED training; Lusk answered that responsibility is shared among principals, school nurses and central office staff. No policy changes were voted on during the safety discussion; the presentation served as an operational update and notice of upcoming training.
