Commission approves JAG grant, proclamations and an overtime policy for deployed fire personnel

At its April meeting, the San Juan County Commission approved multiple routine and policy items brought forward on the agenda.
The commission authorized the county to submit and accept the 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) allocation, which the sheriff's office said totals $20,133 and will be used to purchase six in-car mobile data computers. Corey Cannon told the commission the purchase will exceed the grant by about $1,300, which the sheriff's office will cover from its budget.
The commission adopted a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month after Aliana Butler of Sexual Assault Services of Northwest New Mexico read a proclamation and highlighted prevalence statistics. Commissioners also adopted Resolution 25-26-69 proclaiming April as National County Government Month.
On personnel policy, the commission adopted Resolution 25-26-70 permitting overtime compensation for exempt fire department employees deployed on valid resource orders who work more than 40 hours in a week. Chief Vega said the updated policy requires that deployed exempt employees meet state qualifications, have a valid resource order and obtain written approval from both the county manager and the fire chief before deployment to be eligible for overtime pay.
All measures were passed by voice vote at the meeting. A brief public-comment period was offered on the JAG grant; no members of the public spoke.
