Board rejects pay compensation for two trustees over canceled special meeting; approves contracts and nominations

The Murrieta Valley Unified School District Board voted against a resolution authorizing compensation for two trustees who missed a previously scheduled special meeting, and approved a series of district contracts and nominations at its regular meeting.
Resolution No. 24-25-12 proposed authorizing compensation for Trustees Linda (name spelled Len/Lun in the record) and Nancy Young for absence at the Oct. 23, 2024 special meeting. After discussion about the special meeting’s cancellation and community expectations, the motion failed on a 1–2 tally: Board President Paul Diffley voted yes; Trustees Nicholas Pardue and Julie Vandergriff voted no. The board discussion included Trustee Pardue expressing concern about reimbursing absent trustees when a large community turnout had been expected for the originally scheduled meeting.
On procurement and governance items, the board approved multiple items on motion. The board nominated a slate of candidates to the California School Boards Association delegate assembly (subregion 18A) that included Nancy Young and Nicholas Pardue among others. The board also approved awards and change orders: a contract to Arrow Restaurant Equipment for cafeteria serving equipment, additive/deductive change orders for the new elementary classroom building, Allegiance Electric for solar panel replacement (item and price discussed in public), and Read Family Enterprise for food services infrastructure (approx. $420,034); each item passed on majority votes as announced at the meeting.
Public comment preceding the votes included a heated exchange in which public commenter Francis Burns accused an MEA representative of making his union membership status public and threatened legal action; that allegation was not resolved during the meeting and the MEA president, Lisa Murray, used her later remarks to call for focus on student-centered policies and supports for educators.
The meeting also included student presentations, a learning update and acceptance of both the district audit report and the Measure BB audit (see separate coverage). The board adjourned at 7:34 p.m.
