Yucaipa‑Calimesa board approves fencing, landscaping and campus upgrades; some members oppose future artificial turf

The Yucaipa‑Calimesa Joint Unified School District board on July 16 approved multiple facilities and service contracts, including campus fencing, landscaping projects, concrete campus lettering and the purchase of maintenance vehicles.
Board members approved the fencing for the adult school as part of an ongoing modernization that will enclose parts of the campus while preserving gym access for youth sports. The board also authorized landscaping projects for the adult school and Yucaipa High School and approved placement of concrete letters in front of the high school, with staff saying installations are planned after irrigation and other site work and aiming for completion this calendar year.
During discussion of landscaping at Yucaipa High School, board member Sharon Bannister objected to installing artificial turf in the future, saying "artificial turf is plastic and it's not... a good idea," and district staff noted turf had been priced at roughly $400,000, making it cost‑prohibitive for the current project. The board approved using natural grass and irrigation improvements that staff said would better meet physical education needs.
Separately, the board approved purchase orders for duplicator/copier equipment and vehicle purchases for maintenance and operations, and approved consultant agreements including an athletic trainer for Yucaipa High School. Most items passed unanimously. The consent calendar passed with one item pulled for separate consideration; that purchase‑order item later passed 4–0 with one abstention.
