Washurn students urge city to create young-adults advisory council and expand internships

Washurn Student Government Association leaders Caleb Newfer and Kate Coulter briefed the governing body on April 7 and advocated creation of a young-adults advisory council to increase student civic engagement and retention in Topeka. Coulter described WSGA programs, internship pathways with the city and a recent crosswalk project the student body helped advance.
Council members responded with practical questions about membership, outreach to Washurn Tech and Washburn Law, and opportunities to pair advisory work with workforce-retention initiatives. Several council members encouraged students to work with Forge and other partners on internship pipelines and noted existing city efforts to coordinate with the university.
Council and staff said the conversation would continue; staff noted that the youth commission concept previously existed in Topeka and that Forge has expressed interest in coordinating youth/adult advisory efforts.
