Students share classroom observations and projects at Winchester Board meeting

At Tuesday’s Winchester Board of Education meeting, elementary students presented their observations from instructional rounds and student representatives reported school highlights.
Four students — Woody (sixth grade), Jackson (fifth grade), Leah (fifth grade) and Alexa (sixth grade) — told the board they focused on observable evidence (what they could see or hear rather than inferred feelings), recorded classroom tasks and participation levels on charts, and created posters showing next instructional steps. Students praised hands-on activities, increased student talk time and teacher prompts that encourage students to generate answers. The board thanked the students and applauded their contributions.
Student representatives Mia Ortiz Reyes (Hinsdale) and Luna Johnson (Pearson) gave school updates: Mia described second-grade work on the Civil War, math coin lessons and a request to add flowers to the Hinsdale playground; Luna described kindness-group activities, awareness events, a dinosaurs/fossils field trip to Dinosaur State Park, and academic units on area and perimeter and Norse myths.
The board said the student participation enriched discussion of instruction and reinforced the district’s focus on high-quality teaching and student engagement.
