Dare County backs continued inclusion of Mid‑Currituck Bridge in state STIP

The resolution notes the bridge’s role in improving hurricane evacuation times, reducing severe seasonal congestion on NC‑12 and US‑158, and providing a second crossing to the Outer Banks. Staff and commissioners observed a large funding gap caused by rising construction estimates and suggested NCDOT analyze higher toll scenarios and pursue federal grants or public‑private partnerships to close the gap.
The board also asked a county representative to bring the county’s support to an upcoming RPO meeting as regional deliberations continue. Commissioners framed the vote as supporting public safety and regional economic stability while acknowledging the project’s escalating cost estimates and competing district needs.
The resolution will be transmitted to NCDOT and regional planning partners.
