Baker County fire chief: 'Sergeant' blaze now about 2,479 acres and 50% contained

He also noted drought conditions, reporting a drought index figure of about 585 and saying wind over the next days — forecast at 25–30 mph northeast — was the main near-term concern.
Commissioners and the chief discussed access and public behavior. Nelson praised residents for largely avoiding breakout fires and urged continued caution while the incident remains active. No formal board action was required; the update was received as information.
